Pain Perdu
"Pain Perdu" when translated means lost bread because it is best made with stale French bread that would have possibly been thrown away. By soaking it in the egg and sugared milk mixture it is transformed to a breakfast worthy of a king.
Ingredients: 4 eggs
one-half cup milk
one quarter cup sugar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon cinnamon
one-half teaspoon nutmeg
8 -1" Slices of French bread, cut on a diagonal
2 tablespoons butter
Steen's Cane Syrup
confectioner's sugar
Directions:
1. Combine eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and nutmeg in a bowl and whip with a wire whisk until thoroughly blended.
2. Place bread in egg batter, four slices at a time, and soak for 1-2 minutes on each side to absorb batter.
3. Heat 1 tablespoon butter in frying pan over a medium heat and fry bread on both sides until completely browned. Repeat process with remaining 4 slices of French bread.
4. Place on a plate and drizzle with Steen's Cane Syrup and confectioner's sugar.
Yields 4 servings.
